Teen Volunteers

Idaho legislators really enjoy meeting these special teens!

Young adult volunteers may choose from one or more volunteer roles. If selecting more than one role, make sure the time commitments do not conflict.

Pie Runners (7:45 - 9:15 AM)

Volunteers will stand outside in front of the Capitol in order to receive pie donations as people pull up to the curb. As trays are filled, they will be transported to the 4th floor of the Capitol, and empty trays taken back outside. We need 6 teen volunteers for this job.

Set-up Team (7:30 - 10:00 AM)

Volunteers will help Homeschool Idaho board members unload their cars and take the equipment up to the 4th floor. Additional responsibilities include: Move tables from 1st floor to 2nd and 4th floors via elevator as directed. Place tablecloths on all tables. Place name tags on tables as directed. Stow extra equipment elsewhere. We need 8 volunteers for this job.

Teen Ambassadors (9:30 AM - 2:00 PM)

Volunteers will be available to greet and escort legislators around to the different displays, introducing them to the students and answering their questions. Must be comfortable initiating conversations and being a host. We need 8 volunteers for this job.

Pie Deliveries (12:00 - 2:00 PM)

Volunteers will deliver whole pies to the offices of selected elected officials. We need 4 volunteers for this job.

Tear Down Team (1:45 - 3:00 PM)

Volunteers will remove table cloths, fold them, and put them back in bins. Break down tables and put them back on the carts on the 1st floor. Assist Board members in loading equipment into their cars. We need 8 volunteers for this job.

Important Details

Parking

Parking: It can be challenging to find parking near the capitol. The parking meters are closely monitored, and hefty fines are accrued when they expire.

We recommend parking in the public parking garage on 8th and Bannock. The entrance is on Bannock across from the Banner Bank.

Inside the Capitol

Our capitol building is historic. The elevators are small and sluggish! We suggest you use the beautiful marble stairs!

The rotunda of our capitol is surrounded by a low wall with wide openings, overlooking a 4-story open center. Young children must be very well attended for safety’s sake!

The Legislature is in session during Legislative Pie Day. Be aware that sound carries easily because of the open rotunda.

Meeting Legislators

Our capitol is a formal office environment. Please take advantage of this opportunity to practice etiquette skills like these:

  • Walk, don’t run.
  • Shake hands firmly, though without inflicting pain.
  • Make eye contact when speaking with someone.
  • Speak clearly using adequate volume.
  • Put on your Sunday best.
  • Smile! You will be meeting many potential friends.
